Participation in the Erasmus program is possible after completion of the 2nd semester of the B.A. degree program; there are no restrictions for master’s degree students. As most higher education institutions abroad divide the program of study into academic years rather than independent semesters, it is advisable to start your stay abroad at the beginning of the academic year in the fall. Applications for a stay abroad beginning in the fall usually open in January and February of the same year. If there are more applicants for a particular university than the number of exchange places available, previous academic achievements and language skills will be decisive. If necessary, a letter of motivation may be requested.
The time and duration of the stay abroad should be chosen in such a way that the stay can be meaningfully integrated into the program of study in Mainz. The Erasmus fellowships are partial fellowships that are intended to help cover the additional costs incurred during a stay abroad (travel expenses, difference in living costs). (The current funding rate is 5-9 €/day depending on the country; a special regulation applies to BAFöG recipients).
